モンスターハンター

You can hardly tell the arm piece is off-model ;;

Another week focused entirely on Portable 2nd G. At some point early in the week I decided that I wanted to make a useable gunner set in high rank so I could use bow alongside my other weapons. Instead of making a mixed set that probably would have been easy and powerful, I decided to make the リオレイア希少種 set which gives big luck and has slots for one shot-type-up skill. I had really bad luck getting a fifth 雌火竜の紅玉 to make the arms for the set, but the ドスゲネポス arms were also gold-ish and had some luck and slots, so I was able to use them as a stop-gap solution. And with that, my maxed out set was made (see image). I have to manually slot in 10 gems for the shot type I want to enhance, and it doesn't provide ランナー or any other nice bow skills, but the good luck sometimes feels beneficial, and it's cool to be gold.

With that goal (sort of) achieved (I'm still praying for a 雌火竜の紅玉 any time I hunt a high rank リオレイア of any kind), I advanced my HR in the hub some more, repelling the ラオシャンロン亜種 to get into the mid-point of high rank. At the start of the week, after first making my gold bow set my first hunt was the dual-ダイミョウザザミ hub quest, which was fun because it's not too hard to plink his face constantly and quickly kill him. At the end of the week my last hunt was a dual-ショウグンギザミ hub quest, which was absolutely torturous as his claw reach is enough to punish face plinks and the two of them teamed up constantly. It's funny how both crabs book-ended the week and gave me totally different bow experiences. I think I'll stick to Sword and Shield for ショウグンギザミ from now on.

モンスターハンターストーリーズ2 破滅の翼

A pretty small effort in the game this week. I basically just progressed slightly through the story, defeating a ガノトトス and ドスガレオス before finding out that レウス was in danger and rushing into the desert to save him. In the desert we were blocked by a party of Riders who were working with the Hunters to slow us down as the Hunters put レウス into a sand ship and sailed away. I'm in pursuit of the ship now.

And with that, volume 2 of Otsuka Kadoman's Monster Hunter Play Journal is complete. The final numbered essay in the Portable 2nd section was honestly dreadfully boring, mostly consisting of an "interview" with 辻本良三(つじもとりょうぞう)that didn't really illuminate anything interesting. Then the book went onto the supplemental essays and final remarks. The first supplemental essay was a "making up for failures" kind of thing, recounting Kadoman's successful quest to defeat the twin ラージャン at the end of the village questline. It's a tough-as-nails quest and I really liked his writeup about it, including his strategy, what items he brought, his failure to capture the first ラージャン and having to adjust his strategy after that, and eventually beating the second ラージャン after having consumed all his max potions, and therefore working with limited HP. Following that essay he wrote about what he calls Monster Hunter's 最大の魅力 (Greatest Appeal roughly). What's that appeal, you ask? He explains with a story of his childhood. How he was in a sports club for some team sport. He wasn't the best or the brightest, and he skipped training now and then, but he always came to competitions and he liked playing in general because getting to the end of a game with his team mates brought him a sense of accomplishment. And he feels the same thing in Monster Hunter. Despite not being the greatest hunter, and despite being the kind of guy who might avoid challenging quests if he has alternatives, he still feels a huge sense of accomplishment when he beats a difficult monster or obtains a sought-after item. Following that essay, he writes another about the never-ending nature of Monster Hunter and how the game can only really end when you set a goal and meet it. For a friend of his, Wちゃん, he mentions how she set the goal to make every Sword and Shield weapon in Portable 2nd and put the game aside after she accomplished it. Finally he reports on a day when he went out and played the Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G demo. He had the option to play alone with a felyne companion (a new feature of P2G) or play in a party, and he decided to hunt with three other people. Then the decision of what quest to do came up, and the party decided to do the multi-monster quest which featured フルフル, ゲリョス亜種, and ババコンガ亜種 (new to P2G). It was another fairly interesting hunt report, mostly focusing on the new attacks フルフル and ゲリョス亜種 received in G-rank, but didn't go much deeper than that.

I plan to move onto the third book soonish (maybe before my next report), but wanted to clear up some manga backlog first.

タワーダンジョン

I finally caught up to the current release of Tower Dungeon. After a chance encounter with a venomous slime, サルガン helps the party revive a dying party member with his mother's ring. This event reminds him of his mother and brother, and through his memory the rest of the party finds out that he was born to a dragonkin mother, and his brother was カラーシュ, the evil dragonkin he was pursuing in previous volumes. I appreciated the added details to his character.

The main ユーヴァ party finally links up with フナパ's party, and the now united group plan for their journey to the 80th floor and beyond. They realise that the princess might be being held within one of the pillars on the 80th floor, the only problem being that there are hundreds of pillars and no way of knowing which one holds her. For magical psychic ring reasons they realise that if they split into three smaller groups (with the psychic ringbearers as leaders of each group) and form a triangle on the 80th floor, they will be able to sweep the space and detect secrets within the triangle, so that's what they do. While up there, the Necromancer's army reveals themselves and it becomes a mad rush to sweep for secrets while also warding off hoards of enemies. リリセン defeats a bunch of zombies at once, and we get a flashback of her early school days to help contextualise how hard she pushes herself to survive. The same flashback also introduces another dragonkin family, who seem to have low regard for humans, into the story. Finally, ユーヴァ and his party come across the zombie dragon while fleeing only to see that its body and the bodies of hundreds of humans may have been the fuel for the Necromancer to revive himself physically, or something. We'll see how it pans out in volume 8.
