『モンスターハンター』プレイ日記 本日も逆鱗日和

This book is an edited compilation of journal/blog entries originally written as ファミ通 web content. The author, 大塚角満 (Oozuka Kadoman), quickly falls in love with Monster Hunter and wrote several books worth of journals. This is the first and it covers the original Monster Hunter (MH1), Monster Hunter 2 (Dos), and some of Monster Hunter P2G.

This week I read to about half way through the MH2 section. I was really surprised by just how dense the content is, but upon reflection that makes sense since each journal entry contains something remarkable in a report like this. So sadly I won't be able to cover all the things Kadoman discusses.
His journal about MH1 is the only one where it's clear he's a totally new player, though even after 1400 hours on MH1 it's funny how he's tested by the contents of MH2. Though I've only played a tiny bit of MH1, my assessment of MHFU (MHP2G) was always that the content seemed designed to play on the expectations of veteran hunters. Many of the new monsters feel designed to defy expectations or to recall iconic MH1 monsters in totally different ways. For example, ババコンガ farting instead of roaring when it's mad, and the ダイミョウザザミ, ショウグンギザミ, and シェンガオレン having the skulls of MH1 monsters.

A little list of funny moments in the book.

  • Doing an event quest to capture イャンクック in under 5 minutes and failing spectacularly like 7 times
  • Grinding for a bug armour set only for everyone else to make fun of how his character looks
  • Failing a quest via timeout because he didn't want to bring Lv3 shots. Then bringing those shots, complaining about how much money he's losing, and then his teammates all giving him wyvern fangs (material used to make level 3 ammunition)
  • Learning about a MH2 alchemy recipe, then trying to show off to his friend about the recipe only to spend too much time in the quest and retrieving the wrong item
I could go on and on but I don't want to just rewrite his experiences. It's surprising to me how enjoyable the book has been despite just being a series of blog posts. I also just love the way the world of Monster Hunter is approached by the author. It reminds me of old MH podcasts from the 2010s era (Teamwork Cast and My Fair Hunter were the two big ones for me) which had a much bigger focus on enduring the harsh elements of the game, sharing information, and enjoying the games as a sort of medium for the activity of "hanging out". A lot of MH media I see now is so focused on metas, speedrunning, challengerunning, and other "sweaty" activities, only some of which I care to engage with. Basically I'm saying bring back more bad hunters who rely on their team mates like Kadoman!

モンスターハンター

Yes I played some more Monster Hunter P2G. As mentioned in my last report, I travelled back to Australia, and I managed to actually play a bit of P2G on a few of the planes I rode on my way home.

My allergy to sticking to a single weapon type has struck me and I made a bunch of bows in P2G. I had a handful of very easy hunts, abusing the awesome power of bow against バサリモス etc, and had one awful hunt where I brought a Kut-Ku bow against ガノトトス in high rank and spent over 20 minutes firing into the water with low-range spread shot. I probably would have done better with the Insect bow... Part of the reason I didn't use the Insect bow was because I was grinding for ランゴスタ and カンタロス parts but couldn't get the wing I wanted. Since high rank village doesn't have any gathering quests I was using the "Hunt 20 ブルファンゴ" quest to fight カンタロス, but I had no luck at all finding the part I needed. What gives!?

I also played a bit of MHXX when I got home. I hunted a ドスゲネポス and made a cool paralysis gunlance. Next week I plan to play Monster Hunter Stories 2. I honestly don't remember much about the first game's plot, but I figure it won't matter too much. Maybe if I like 2 enough to beat it I'll go back and replay 1.
