Reading Report: 18 June 2023

Another fairly slow week, but I finally wrapped on Tears of the Kingdom. No real spoilers for the ending, just vibes. I also read some of the newly released 光が死んだ夏 Volume 3 and played a bunch of Dragon Quest.

光が死んだ夏
Vol 3 (partial)
This volume introduces some new characters and furthers the investigation by the adults in the community into the strange events of the town. There's also the regular tension as expected between the leads. A bit more focus is put on a girl in the class who seems to have a crush on Hikaru. I haven't finished the volume yet, so it's probably more clear how she feels as it develops.

One Piece: Up to episode 98
Another really light week mostly filled with other stuff. The two episodes I watched were one sort of filler about a bunch of endemic life in the desert who gave the crew trouble and then a group of nomads who challenge the crew to a race. We find out that one nomad has a history with Vivi.

ゼルダの伝説:ティアーズ・オブ・ザ・キングダム
I finished the game and really enjoyed my time with it. Although the puzzle itself wasn't super engaging, the final dungeon stuff had one sort of fun puzzle which involved lateral thinking about the language used (although no more complicated than most videogames). Throughout the whole game I never really engaged with quest markers and was still able to find my way to where NPCs wanted me to be just based on text descriptions and stuff which I will always see as a win for comprehension. The final moments of the game were pretty good but not particularly noteworthy in terms of immersion.

ドラゴンクエスト1 and X
Not exactly written for this week alone but I might as well mention. For a thing I'm writing I replayed DQ1 for like the umpteenth time; like the second or third time in Japanese. It's still good. I also watched a bunch of Let's Play footage of the Famicom version. I played a bit of DQX Offline. Similarly to TotK I'm trying to play without map guidance and focusing just on text to make my way to places and overall I find the process more engaging.

Life Stuff
As I post this my partner is on a plane to Australia. For that reason this is coming out about 12 hours earlier than I'd usually update things. It also means I may be a bit inconsistent with updates for the next month or so, although I'll try my best. The article I've been working on has been making good progress, although not nearly as much as it could be if I just sat down and treated it like a proper job or something. I feel like I've maybe put a couple of hours into the whole thing total, like it could have been knocked out in a day and I'm just procrastinating for weeks... anyway good progress. Hopefully soon I'll have something to show for it.
