Reading Report: 30 April 2023
A somewhat okay week given the amount of work I had to do and the other stressors going on. I'm finally in the home stretch of 月まで三キロ and I finished the first season(?) of One Piece.
月まで三キロ 60 pages
🪐 エイリアンの食堂
I ended up really liking this story. Definitely in the top 3 stories of the book so far. It sort of hinges on a fairly cliché trope of like "nobody's ever really gone" through the lens of physics/chemistry, but the connection between プレア, 鈴花, and 謙介 was really nice and it had a cute moment at the end when they were yelling at the sky.
😩 山を刻む
A woman hiking a mountain alone meets two volcanologists. As she learns more about them, about their field of study, and the danger of volcanology, she's reminded of the family she's leaving behind. In reference to the volcanologists talking about shaving away tiny layers of the mountain (山を刻む) she says 私も山のように刻んだ (or something like that). Basically in her mind ever since she settled down and started a family she's been worn down day by day by the people around her. The story alternates between anecdotes of her past with her family and moments of her on the mountain. In that way the writing is more like 月まで三キロ (the first story in the book) than the other stories. Anyway it's pretty good so far. Even though it's still early in the story there have already been moments that made me cry, which is the fastest of any story so far.
One Piece: Up to episode 62. The end of ココヤシ村, the entirety of ローグタウン and ロストアイランド, and finally entering the Grand Line. The ロストアイランド part with アピス and りゅうじ was pretty cute but I think the カマカマの実 guy was fairly unthreatening the whole time. The story was mostly good just on the back of アピス.
Life Stuff
I saw my doctor and was referred to a radiologist, but the person who does the thing I need is on leave so I need to arrange another place. It wouldn't have been the end of the world but the receptionist who told me that was super rude and it really killed my mood so... I decided to leave it until Monday.
I finished yet another project. I feel like it was about the best I could do but... it still felt like not amazing work. I really feel worn thin between school and other self-improvement study I want to do. I know I need to prioritise the school stuff of course... maybe once I finish my current book I'll have some more time.
In good news, now my only projects are one (1) essay-type thing, a few reflection-type writing tasks, one online test, and the rest is group work which has a fairly rigid timeline. It sounds like more now that I've typed it out but I don't think it's too much... well anyway. Good luck to me.
