My Self Portrait
Ruby Rawlins

The content of my character exists across the internet, scattered by a decade of shifting media landscapes, the birth and death of giant social media websites, and a personality which values privacy.
I am hoping this website can offer a glimpse into the vastness of my person.

I'm passionate about communication and culture. I've been studying Japanese since 2019. I'm certified JLPT N2 and worked as a Japanese-English translator in 2022 and 2023. I enjoy the process of highlighting Japanese cultural texts for western audiences. As part of my continued study into the Japanese language and culture I write weekly Reading Reports about media I engage with.

I am a broad reader of fiction and non-fiction and have explored the vast seas of Japanese media from romance to mecha, from magical girls to erotic horror. I'm always looking for new ways to examine the world through art and anthropology.

I'm a 2nd Year student at RMIT University studying a Bachelor of Professional Communications (Advertising). I decided to focus on advertising rather than the alternatives because I believe advertising has the potential to be a force for good when used to highlight artists and small businesses.

I consider myself a better copywriter than artist, but my aesthetic sensibilities bring a certain something to my work.

Since July 2024 I've been working to further develop my design and other hard skills. I coded this website from the ground up, learning HTML, CSS, and a smidgen of Javascript as I went. I'm a strong believer in the "learn as you go" and "learn by imitation" methods.

Everything on this website was designed and placed by me. It is as valuable a resource to understand me as this page.

I have no active social media, but I encourage anyone interested to contact me via the resources available.

A Brief Timeline

Also Ruby Rawlins.

Born in 1991, some of my earliest memories involve holding a game controller or watching anime too mature for my age. Japanese aesthetics enraptured me, and I never really escaped the whirlpool of kawaii, dot-matrix displays, or web 1.0 design sensibilities (see this whole website).

A middle child wedged between two older and two younger siblings, I've always played the role of mediator. I spent many of my early years with my head in sketchbooks, doodling pages and pages of playful creatures.

After graduating childhood education in 2009 I spent ten years soul searching. It was still in my nature to be creative, and I spent much of my spare time making amateur art, writing, and trying new things.

Nothing makes me happier than satisfying a client.

In 2022 I started translating Japanese media professionally. The majority of the work I did was for independent adult artists. I'm proud of the work I did bringing Japanese stories to the West when those stories might not otherwise have been told. Some people shy away from adult media, but I've always seen it as a compelling form of human expression worthy of protection and admiration.

In total I produced translations for over 1000 pages of manga.

In 2023 I enrolled at RMIT University under a Bachelor of Professional Communication. I finished my first year with recognition of my academic excellence by the Dean of Communication.

In 2024 I majored in Advertising and minored in Asian Media and Communications. I overcame a fear of firearms and travelled to the United States of America for the first time in my life.

In 2025 I hope to break even more new ground. My story is only just beginning.
